This page explains the data collected by the “Learn Russian with Ahmed Elgamal” (تعلم الروسية مع أحمد الجمل) Android app and Windows program, why we collect it, who sees it, and when it is deleted. The last part covers this website.

Who we are

The app, the Windows program and this website are owned by Dr. Ahmed Elgamal, a Russian language lecturer in Egypt, who is responsible for your data. When this page says “we” or “the platform”, it means him and his assistants.

Data you enter when you sign up

Full name (three names), mobile number and password
Purpose: Creating your account, signing you in and contacting you. The password is stored encrypted in a way that cannot be read, not even by the lecturer.
Account type (university student or general), and university and faculty for university students
Purpose: Organizing students and opening the right content for each student.
Student code: a number given to your account automatically
Purpose: Identifying your account when you contact us, and the watermark.

The lecturer may also create your account himself with the same data (one by one or from an Excel file) instead of you signing up in the app.

Data collected while you use the app

An identifier of your phone and an identifier of your computer, and the history of moving the account between devices
Purpose: Linking your account to one phone and one computer. The identifier is stored on the server in a transformed form from which the original cannot be recovered.
Device details: its name and model, operating system version, app version, whether it is a tablet, and the dates of the first sign-in and last use
Purpose: Shown to the lecturer on your student page to help you and solve problems.
The last time you opened the app, and the record of opening lectures with their times
Purpose: The lecturer’s reports (such as the list of students who have not opened a new lecture), and applying the refund policy in the Terms of Use.
Video watching and listening progress, the point where you stopped, the last page of a handout, your notes on videos, the stars on dictionary words, and playback settings (video speed, subtitles and their size, dictionary playback)
Purpose: “Continue where you left off”, “My study” and the lecturer’s reports, and the view limit if the lecturer sets one.
Answers to exams and homework, including the text, photos and voice recordings in essay answers, start and submission times, how many times you played a question’s audio, and the grades and the grader’s comments
Purpose: Grading and results.
Your subscriptions and their dates, and the activation codes you used
Purpose: Opening content for you and calculating when a subscription ends.
Requests to subscribe, renew, move to a new device and delete the account
Purpose: Serving you and answering your requests.
Reading and opening notifications
Purpose: Your notifications list, and how many students opened each notification in the lecturer’s log.
The Firebase notification token
Purpose: Delivering the app’s notifications to your phone.
Attempts to record or capture the screen, show it on another screen, use an emulator, or use a modified (rooted) phone, with the content name, the device and the time
Purpose: Content protection.

Data the lecturer adds to your account

  • The group you are in (such as a learning center’s name), to organize students and open content and send notifications to the whole group at once.
  • Private notes the lecturer writes on your student page, which are not shown to you.
  • Extra views for you, if the lecturer sets a view limit.

How content protection works

The app blocks screenshots and screen recording on the video, listening practice, handout, exam and homework, and answer review screens.

To detect recording attempts, the Windows program checks the names of the programs running on the computer and signs of a virtual machine, and the Android app checks for files and apps known for modifying the phone (root) or running Android on a computer, and for screens connected to the phone. This check happens on your device only, and only the type of attempt is sent to the server if one is detected, never the list of programs.

Your name, your code or both may appear as a watermark on videos and handouts, and on a handout copy you download, if the lecturer turns it on for that content.

Permissions the app asks for

  • Camera (Android): only to photograph an essay answer, requested the first time you choose to take a photo.
  • Microphone (Android and Windows): only to record an essay answer with your voice, and only while recording.
  • Storage (Android 7 to 9 only): to save a handout to the Downloads folder when you tap “Download”, if the lecturer allows downloading it. Android 10 and later do not need this permission.
  • Notifications (Android 13 and later): to show the platform’s notifications.

Choosing a photo from the gallery uses the Android or Windows photo picker, so the app only gets the photos you choose. The app does not ask for your location or your contacts.

What is stored on your device

This data stays on your device and is not sent to us:

  • Your recent searches.
  • Dark mode, sound effects, volume, the repeat and pause settings of listening practice, and the window size on Windows.
  • Temporary dictionary audio files, which are deleted when you sign out.

The app also keeps your sign-in on your device, encrypted with the operating system’s protection, so you do not have to type your password every time. If the internet is cut, watching progress and answers are kept on your device temporarily and sent to the server when the connection comes back. A handout you download stays in the Downloads folder until you delete it.

Who sees your data

Your data is stored on the platform’s server and is seen by the lecturer and his assistants, each assistant according to his permissions. We use these outside services:

  • YouTube (Google): videos play through the YouTube player inside the app, so it receives what any YouTube player receives (such as your internet address and device type), under Google’s privacy policy.
  • Firebase (Google): only to send notifications to your phone. It receives the notification token and the notification text.
  • WhatsApp: when you tap a button that opens WhatsApp (such as “Subscribe” or “Support”), the message is written for you with your name and code, and goes through WhatsApp when you send it yourself.
  • The hosting company Hetzner Online GmbH (Germany): it runs the platform’s server and stores its data. The server is in Finland, inside the European Union.
  • Cloudflare: every connection between the app, the Windows program or the website and the server passes through it for protection and encryption, so it receives your device’s internet address.

We do not sell your data, and we do not share it with anyone for advertising.

Protecting your data

  • The connection between the app, the Windows program, the website and the server is encrypted.
  • The platform’s server does not log visitors’ addresses; it keeps an error log only.
  • Handouts, photos and recordings open through temporary links that expire after minutes, after your access is checked.
  • We count wrong sign-in and activation code attempts, and temporarily block attempts if they repeat, to protect your account from guessing.

How long data is kept

  • Your data is kept as long as your account exists.
  • Notifications are removed from your list after 90 days.
  • Exam data (answers, grades and attachments) may be deleted by the lecturer at the end of a term or year.
  • The Excel file the lecturer uses to add students is deleted from the server 7 days after it is uploaded.
  • Server backups are deleted automatically within 30 days. An encrypted copy is kept outside the server on Google Drive, unreadable without the encryption password, and is deleted within the same period.

Deleting your account and changing your data

You can ask for your account and data to be deleted from “My account” in the app, with your password, or on the Delete account page (in Arabic), with your mobile number and password. The account is deleted within 7 days of the request.

Permanently deleted: the account, subscriptions, watching progress, notes, grades and answers with their attachments, stars, device links, requests, notifications and protection records.

Kept: your account’s lines in the activity log (your name and code only) to know what was done on the account, and backups until they are deleted automatically within 30 days.

You can see your data in “My account” in the app, and change your password there. To change your name, number or other data, contact us, as the lecturer is the one who edits it.

Age

The app is for people aged 13 or older, and is not directed at children.

This website

  • The website does not need an account or sign-in, and does not use cookies of its own.
  • If you open the website from an ad link that contains a word identifying the ad, the word is kept in your browser until you close the tab, and added to the WhatsApp message so the lecturer knows which ad you came from.
  • The intro video is not loaded from YouTube until you tap play.
  • The account deletion page sends the mobile number and password to the server to confirm the account owner. When wrong details are entered, your device’s internet address is stored in a transformed form from which it cannot be recovered, to prevent guessing, and it is deleted after 15 minutes.

Changes to this policy

If what the app or the website collects changes, we update this page and the “Last updated” date at the top.
